Haydon School

Robert Jones is the headteacher at Haydon School, an Academy for students aged 11-18 years and  based in Middlesex. Here he outlines the work that has been done to improve staff wellbeing and workload, making the school a more positive and productive place to work.

As it says in our Mission Statement and aims for our school, we are firmly committed to individual excellence, seeking the best from every student and ensuring that all students fulfil their potential. We wanted to make sure this ethos included the staff too. It would be unrealistic to think our staff could give their best to the students if we did not act on a commitment to their wellbeing and potential too.

The survey process was a smooth one. The consultant from Education Support Partnership introduced and presented the process and the staff completed the confidential survey when it suited them.

Our consultant took us through the process of unpicking and interpreting the responses – a very valuable exercise. It was evident from the results that an unmanageable workload was the key issue facing the vast majority of staff.

We wanted to address this in a meaningful way and make sure the real challenge was addressed. Throughout the school we have now adjusted the timetabled teaching week from 30 x 50 minute lessons to 25 x one hour lesson.  Staff are now preparing 5 fewer lessons per week which has had a significant impact on their workload. It’s a solution that works for all of us and gives the students the opportunity to focus on their subjects too. Other benefits include:

  • workload issues improved for everyone
  • it’s a more productive place to work now

We can highly recommend Education Support Partnership. They took us through a process for making changes we just could not have done on our own.
