Marathon running for teachers in crisis

We're very grateful to Katy O'Connor, Headteacher of Lessness Heath Primary School. She is running the London Marathon to raise money to help ensure her fellow teachers and education staff can get support when they need it.

I have taught in and led schools in challenging circumstances throughout my career spanning a twenty year period. I strongly believe in positive school cultures that look after and protect the wellbeing of the whole school community. I believe in nurturing a culture of trust and autonomy in my school to ensure I get the very best outcomes for children.

The teaching professional is fragile yet we all do one of the most valuable and impactful jobs in the world.  As a serving headteacher, I have seen first hand how we must look after the people in our organisations to ensure the next generations are taught by the best and the most committed people.

Currently, I am the head teacher of a three form Primary school in the South East. We were the first school nationally to be awarded the Wellbeing for Schools award and as part of this journey, I was introduced to the Education Support Partnership.

This academic year, I was invited to be part of a roundtable event organised by Education Support Partnership about teacher wellbeing. It was here that I learnt about the fantastic work the charity does to support teachers and others working in education with their wellbeing and mental health.

As I was very lucky to get a ballot place for the London Marathon this year I decided to help Ed Support with their vital work. With over a third of education staff expected to leave the profession by 2020, this charity are needed now more than ever. Stress and anxiety levels across the sector are reaching alarming levels and calls to their helpline are increasing year on year.

I am well on the way through the training plan to get me ready for 28th April and recently completed the Canterbury 10 Mile Road Race. I work my training around my job and my family but running is a big part of my wellbeing and I love it!
