The Duchess of Cambridge attends Ed Support keynote

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge attended The Royal Foundation’s Mental Health in Education conference on Wednesday 13 February, which included a keynote speech from our CEO Sinéad Mc Brearty.

In front of leaders from across education and health, Mc Brearty talked about the impact that the wellbeing and mental health of school staff has on pupils, institutions, the education system and wider societal and economic outcomes.

Following this, The Duchess of Cambridge made an unscheduled address where she praised teachers for the “vital” role they play in shaping pupils’ lives and called for more support for their wellbeing.

She said: “What you’ve all been discussing here today really brings to life the vital role that teachers are playing in supporting our youngest children’s mental health.

"It is also clear that the positive development of our children is directly linked to those who care for them: teachers, carers and parents.

“And as we’ve heard today, it is therefore vital that we support teachers with their own wellbeing so that they can provide the best level of care for all children in their schools and communities in which they work.”

The conference at Mercers’ Hall in London brought together experts to explore and discuss the benefits of collaborative working and what more can be done to tackle mental health issues in schools.

Last year The Duchess of Cambridge launched Mentally Healthy Schools – a website for primary schools, offering teachers and school staff information, advice and practical resources to understand and promote pupils’ mental health and wellbeing – in partnership with Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, Place2Be and YoungMinds.

We were pleased to provide guidance and advice for this valuable resource. To view, visit mentallyhealthyschools.org.uk.
